If you own a CEREC system running CEREC 5.2, you may be wondering what you actually gain by moving to CEREC 5.3—and whether upgrading is necessary at all.

The short answer: CEREC 5.3 is an evolutionary update, not a complete redesign of CEREC.


For practices using traditional CEREC hardware such as an Omnicam or Primescan Acquisition Center paired with a CEREC MC XL, MC X, or Primemill, much of the familiar scanning, design, and manufacturing workflow remains intact.

The patient is scanned, the restoration is designed locally, and the manufacturing job is sent to a milling unit on the practice network.


That traditional workflow remains possible with CEREC 5.3.


CEREC 5.3, however, expands the connection between CEREC and DS Core. Restoration designs can be uploaded to the DS Core media library, and supported manufacturing workflows can be managed through the connected ecosystem.


This becomes particularly useful for larger practices, multiple treatment rooms, or offices using several digital devices.


Instead of requiring every step of the workflow to revolve around a single Acquisition Center, DS Core can serve as a central connection point between scanning, case data, design, and manufacturing.


Primescan 2 Is One of the Strongest Reasons to Move to CEREC 5.3


Primescan 2 represents a significantly different scanning architecture from the original Primescan AC.


A traditional Primescan is physically connected to an Acquisition Center. The AC provides the computing platform used for scanning and CEREC software.


Primescan 2 is designed around a cloud-connected workflow through DS Core.


CEREC 5.3 provides the connection between this newer scanning environment and the traditional CEREC restorative workflow.


With supported CEREC 5.3 versions, scans created with Primescan 2 can be brought into CEREC for restoration design and subsequent manufacturing.


This creates one of the clearest dividing lines between the two software generations:


If you plan to integrate Primescan 2 into your CEREC restorative workflow, CEREC 5.3 is the appropriate software generation.


For a practice using an existing Omnicam or Primescan AC, this particular advantage may be much less important.


Does CEREC 5.3 Still Support Omnicam?


For owners of pre-owned or refurbished CEREC equipment, this is an important question.


Yes. Compatible Omnicam Acquisition Centers can continue to operate with CEREC 5.3.


However, the camera itself is only one part of the compatibility equation.


The computer hardware and operating system inside the Acquisition Center also matter. Later Omnicam AC systems and appropriately upgraded earlier systems may support later CEREC 5 software, while an original older Acquisition Center may require hardware upgrades.


When evaluating an older Omnicam system, consider the entire configuration:

  • Omnicam camera
  • Acquisition Center generation
  • Computer hardware
  • Windows version
  • CEREC software version
  • CEREC license
  • Any previous hardware or performance upgrades


This is particularly important when purchasing a used CEREC system.


Two Omnicam Acquisition Centers that look nearly identical externally may have very different internal computer hardware and software capabilities.


What About Primescan AC?


Primescan AC remains highly relevant in the CEREC 5.3 ecosystem.


The introduction of Primescan 2 does not automatically make Primescan AC obsolete.


The traditional workflow remains straightforward:


Primescan → Acquisition Center → CEREC Software → Milling Unit


For many practices, this is still an extremely efficient chairside workflow. Scanning and restoration design take place on a dedicated CEREC workstation, and manufacturing can remain local.


CEREC 5.3 adds additional connectivity around that established workflow rather than eliminating it.


Does CEREC 5.3 Still Support the MC XL?


Yes—and this is especially important for practices considering pre-owned equipment.


There is a common misconception that newer CEREC software automatically requires a CEREC Primemill.


It does not.


CEREC 5.3 continues to support legacy CEREC manufacturing equipment, including compatible configurations of the CEREC MC XL and MC X.


Dentsply Sirona has continued publishing CEREC 5.3-series tooling and material information for these milling units.


This means a practice does not necessarily need to replace a functional MC XL simply because it moves to newer CEREC software.


There is an important limitation, however: Software cannot give an older milling unit mechanical capabilities it was never designed to perform.


Certain materials and manufacturing strategies may require specific motors, burs, firmware, serial-number ranges, or dry-milling configurations.


Always evaluate software compatibility and milling-unit compatibility separately.


Primemill and SpeedFire


Both CEREC 5.2 and 5.3 can support the modern Primemill and SpeedFire workflow, depending on the specific software and firmware versions involved.


Practices using newer manufacturing equipment generally have a stronger reason to remain current with CEREC software.


For a practice running an MC XL primarily to produce established glass-ceramic restorations, the everyday difference between a mature CEREC 5.2 installation and CEREC 5.3 may be relatively modest.


For a practice using Primemill, SpeedFire, newer manufacturing workflows, Primescan 2, and DS Core, the advantages of CEREC 5.3 become much more significant.


Software Compatibility Is Not the Same as Material Compatibility


This distinction causes a lot of confusion when evaluating CEREC equipment.


A material must be supported by the CEREC software, but it must also be compatible with the specific manufacturing unit and its configuration.


Depending on the restoration and material, compatibility may depend on:

  • CEREC software version
  • Milling-unit model
  • Milling-unit serial number
  • Motor configuration
  • Bur set
  • Firmware
  • Wet or dry milling capability
  • Material manufacturer's requirements


This is why simply upgrading the software does not necessarily unlock every newer material on an older MC XL.


At the same time, a properly configured MC XL can remain surprisingly capable, even when paired with newer CEREC software.


CEREC 5.2 Is Not Simply “Obsolete CEREC 5.3”

It is easy to assume that because 5.3 has a higher version number, CEREC 5.2 immediately became obsolete.


That is an oversimplification.


CEREC 5.2 developed into a mature software platform with improvements to scanning, restoration proposals, dynamic occlusion, manufacturing, Primemill operation, material support, case recovery, and general workflow.


Later releases of CEREC 5.2 also introduced some DS Core-related connectivity.


CEREC 5.3 takes the platform further by making the connected DS Core ecosystem a much more central part of the CEREC workflow.

This means you shouldn't assume that installing CEREC 5.3 automatically gives you every cloud feature associated with the newer ecosystem.


Some functionality requires a DS Core account, compatible connected equipment, and potentially a paid DS Core subscription.


Primescan 2, in particular, relies on the DS Core ecosystem.


Is CEREC 5.3 Worth It for an Omnicam and MC XL?


Consider a common pre-owned CEREC configuration:


Omnicam AC + CEREC 5.2 + CEREC MC XL


If the system is stable and the practice primarily produces crowns, inlays, onlays, and similar restorations from established materials, upgrading to CEREC 5.3 may provide relatively little improvement to the everyday clinical workflow.


The Omnicam will not become a Primescan.


The MC XL will not become a Primemill.


And the fundamental CEREC restoration-design process does not suddenly become an entirely different experience.


If the practice has no need for Primescan 2 or deeper DS Core integration, a stable CEREC 5.2 installation can continue to make excellent sense.


This is especially true if an older Acquisition Center would require additional computer hardware or other upgrades to run the desired software.


When Does CEREC 5.3 Make Sense?


Moving to CEREC 5.3 becomes much more compelling if your practice is:

In these situations, the connectivity improvements in CEREC 5.3 can provide meaningful workflow benefits.


When Does Staying With CEREC 5.2 Make Sense?


There are also situations where upgrading simply to have the newest version may provide little practical benefit.


Staying with CEREC 5.2 may make sense when:

  • Your existing system is stable
  • You use Omnicam or Primescan AC rather than Primescan 2
  • You don't need deeper DS Core integration
  • You primarily use established restorative materials
  • Your MC XL or MC X meets your manufacturing needs
